Geothermal

There are many names associated with heating and cooling systems that derive and release their energy from and to the Earth. Some of the most common terms are: geothermal heat pump or system, geoexchange system, ground source heat pump, and water-source heat pump. These systems use the Earth to absorb heat during the winter; during the summer, they use the Earth to reject heat from the system. They are becoming more and more popular because of their efficiency, as well as current tax incentives related to their installation.

Types of Geothermal Systems

Closed Loop

- Vertical
  • Pipes run vertically within a well bored in the ground. This system is generally used when there is limited land area available.

  • - Horizontal
  • Pipes run horizontally within a trench in the ground. When adequate land is available this will be the most cost-efficient method of installation.

  • - Pond
  • Pipes are attached to a frame and lowered into a pond. This method is not as common since it depends on the proximity of your home to a pond.

  • Open Loop

    - Standing Column Well
  • This method is sometimes referred to as a "pump and dump" system. In other words, water is drawn from the bottom of the well and disposed of at the top. The disposed water travels down the well exchanging heat while being exposed to bedrock. This method depends on the availability of bedrock at the surface.
